Kiros, who immigrated to the US from Ethiopia as a child, has faced controversy for his opposition to pro-Israel Democrats and his association with political commentator Hasan Piker.
Now he is poised to win the November election in a democratic state.
Kiros, a 29-year-old former lawyer, was fired after refusing to withdraw a document that criticized the law firm for its views on Israel and Palestine and called Israel’s actions in Gaza “intentional”.
Kiros is the latest Democrat to unseat an incumbent Democrat this summer.
In New York City, three candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America and endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani won their primaries.
Also on Tuesday, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser beat US Senator Michael Bennet in the Democratic nomination for governor, US media reports.
Weiser criticized Bennet in a race that was largely about who has the best chance of protecting Colorado against President Donald Trump, who has suspended federal funding and blocked a major drinking water project in Colorado, where voters have gone Democratic for the past 20 years.
The attorney general has argued that he has represented the Trump administration in court, where he has fought the funding freeze and the president’s attempt to end citizenship rights.
Weiser is expected to be nominated for governor in November.
State Rep. Manny Rutinel also won the Democratic primary to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans in a battleground state that Democrats see as a chance to win the Nov. 3 midterm elections, according to projections.
Rutinel, a progressive, defeated incumbent state representative Shannon Bird in a campaign focused on immigration. The area north of Denver and the surrounding suburbs is about 40 percent Latino.
Evans narrowly won his seat in 2024 but has a bigger financial advantage than Rutinel, showing $3.4m in campaign funds to Rutinel’s $910,000.
Trump’s Republican Party now has a narrow majority in the US House of Representatives and the Senate. Democrats need three seats to win in November and four to win the Senate.
