Demis Hassabis Thinks AI Job Cuts Are Dumb

Demis Hassabis, and CEO of Google DeepMindis eager to talk about his company’s latest brand of writing technology, Gemini 3.5 Flash. The model has been trained to perform complex agent coding tasks: translating large codes from one language to another; find and fix bugs that are hidden within the policy; and writing all the operating systems from scratch.

Hassabis, however, doesn’t think this spells doom for developers. “I don’t know why people are going so serious about this,” Hassabis tells WIRED ahead of the new version. today’s Google I/O event.

“Maybe there’s an ulterior motive for sending the messages; raising money or whatever,” says Hassabis. “My opinion, from DeepMind and Google, if engineers are doing three or four times more things, then (we want to) do three or four times more things.”

The impressive capabilities of the latest models have led many to fear that AI may be on the verge of eliminating software responsibilities and other white-collar jobs. Executives at some AI companies have predicted a proliferation of jobs, while other well-known companies, including Amazon, Salesforceand Blockand criticized the recent work in the use of AI.

Hassabis thinks that Alphabet, which controls several companies other than Google, may have an opportunity to use software changes. “I have a million ideas, from inventing lab drugs to making games,” he says. “I’d love to have a free engineer to go and do this kind of thing.”

Hassabis says companies looking to replace manufacturers with AI may be making a serious mistake. He said: “I think it’s a bad idea – and not understanding what’s really going to happen.”

Google revealed a lot of AI products at their annual developer event. Through a writing tool called Antigravity, Gemini 3.5 Flash offers the ability to write borders and imagination but is faster and cheaper than its competitors’ offerings, Google says. Gemini 3.5 Pro, the new, more powerful version of its flagship model, will launch next month.

The company needs to follow suit when it comes to AI coding, which has emerged as an important and rewarding career in the latest AI models. Anthropic and OpenAI lead developers based on their tools, Claude and Codex, according to 2025 Stack Overflow survey.

The company has also released a virtual assistant called Spark that resides in Google’s cloud and can run its own apps. The design is supposed to be more secure than something like OpenClaw because it has access to personal information, Google says.

Other earlier versions included an Android version with a built-in AI assistant and a refreshed version of Google Search that uses agent code to create a page or app on the fly in response to a search query.

Artificial intelligence has captured the attention of the AI ​​world in recent months, even fueling hopes that some brands may one day rewrite their own code in the fashion industry. Hassabis says it’s possible but doubts it will lead to super-high AI.

Advances in other areas of science may require AI models to have a deeper understanding of the environment and the ability to conduct experiments within it, he says.
