Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup quarter-final clash with Belgium will be his team’s toughest yet, while praising Lionel Messi’s exceptional form for Argentina.
The Spanish national team is going to meet Belgium this Friday evening, where the winner will play against France in the semi-finals.
“Belgium is a team with a lot of experience and includes players who are used to competing and winning at the biggest European clubs, so it will be our toughest match so far.”
About the possibility of a meeting with France in the semi-finals, the Spanish coach explained that he watched the victory of the Roosters over Morocco, adding:

De La Fuente also spoke of his team’s attacking prowess, praising Lamin Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal, stressing that Spain’s success in the tournament has come from teamwork rather than relying on one star.
De Lafuente defended Lamin Yamal, saying: “He has great talent and had a special game against Portugal, even if he didn’t score, and for all his amazing levels, the next one will be even more fun.”
When asked about Lionel Messi’s brilliance at the tournament, De La Fuente did not hide his admiration for what the Argentina captain did, saying:
He added: “In addition to the tremendous maturity and experience he has gained over the years, what sets him apart most is his dedication. He never gets tired and is never satisfied with success, but he wants more every day.”
The Spanish coach emphasized that Messi is a true example for his teammates and new generations of players, explaining: “What he offers deserves appreciation and praise because it proves that a player who continues to work and strive without stopping is always closer to achieving his goals.”
De La Fuente concluded his speech about the Argentine star by saying: “Messi has always been a master of this throughout his career, and the most amazing thing is that even today, despite everything he has achieved and won, he still continues to prove it on the pitch.”
