De Jong’s injury revives Barcelona’s coffers with significant compensation

The International Football Federation (FIFA) has committed to provide financial compensation to “Barcelona” after the injury suffered by the player. Dutchman Frankie de Jong at the 2026 World Cup.

This injury is a major blow to the team’s coach Hans Flick’s plans for the start of the 2026/2027 season, and although the sporting damage caused to the Catalan team cannot be compensated, the club will receive financial compensation from FIFA, the total value of which depends on the number of days the player is absent from the field.

The Spanish “Sport” newspaper reports. In June 2023, FIFA introduced the “Club Protection Scheme”, which provides financial compensation to clubs in the event that their international players suffer physical injuries while participating in international tournaments with the national teams, provided that these injuries lead to the player’s total and temporary absence for more than 28 consecutive days.

This financial coverage includes matches falling under the name of “Category A of International Games” between two national teams, held on the dates specified in the agenda of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), or the periods covered by the process of inviting players to participate in these matches.

The defense system also includes friendlies for the top teams to prepare for the finals of the continental confederation championships, such as the European Cup of Nations and the Copa America, in addition to the men’s and women’s World Cup finals.

In the case of Frankie de Jong, he was injured during the 32nd round of the 2026 World Cup between Holland and Morocco.

The terms of the program set the maximum compensation provided to clubs at up to €7.5 million for each injury to a single player.

Based on this maximum compensation, which includes a period of disability of up to 365 days, the daily amount of compensation is calculated at €20,548 for each day of the player’s absence from the field.

The calculation of this financial compensation depends solely on the fixed salary that the club pays the player in his capacity as an employee, including social security costs, while the compensation excludes any additional bonus, exceptional money, performance-related incentives or signing bonuses.

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) regulations state that the payment of daily compensation does not include the first day when the temporary total disability begins, nor does it include the first 28 consecutive days of disability that are considered (waiting period), and does not include the day when the player’s temporary total disability ends.

The payment of financial compensation to the club ceases when the player’s temporary total disability ends and he can resume all training with his team or participate in official matches, whether or not there is an actual opportunity to participate in games, or if the maximum period of 365 days has expired.

The total amount that Barcelona can acquire depends on the final diagnosis of Frenkie de Jong’s injury and the total time it will take him to overcome the physical problem and return to normal training with his teammates.

Some expectations suggest that the Blaugrana midfielder could be out for four to six months, with the option of undergoing surgery. In this case, the Catalan club will receive at least two million euros.
