Daryl Powell: Wakefield Trinity boss says captain’s challenge must be scrapped

The captain had a challenge 2025 Super League games introduced and allows teams to contest referee decisions at stoppages in play. Teams are allowed one failed challenge per game.

The system was first introduced in Australia’s National Rugby League in 2020 with the aim of reducing the impact of referee errors on the outcome of a match.

During Saturday’s match, some incidents required lengthy evaluations for review.

Peta Hiku thought he had grounded the ball for a late Hull KR try that would have won his side the game, only to have his effort blocked after a lengthy review by Rush that painstakingly assessed multiple angles.

Meanwhile, the Robins could value a high tackle using their captain’s challenge late on, which Powell said was a tactical decision.

“I can’t tell you how many times he’s seen that hiccup,” Powell added.

“I’ve never seen anyone in my life look at an event so much and it was obvious from the second (angle).

“Your fans are slowly clapping now. We don’t want that.

“The beauty of this game is the flow and the energy and the intensity of it. A clear high tackle to defend in the last four minutes went for a challenge on the Hull KR captain. Well, it was a clear high tackle.

“What if you add the time taken from the captain’s challenge today? Maybe 15 minutes?

“It’s not good for the sport, everyone is saying that. Get rid of it. If not now, then next season.”
