At the legendary Oka Arena in Athens, Real Madrid experienced a dark night that will never be erased from the memory after losing 92-85 to Olympiakos of Greece in the final of the European Basketball League, in a game in which they almost pulled off a miracle despite the absence of all anchors.
Heroic performance without pay
Without Eddie Tavares, Alex Len and Ousmane Garouba, Real executed coach Sergio Scariolo’s perfect game plan and led most of the match thanks to the exceptional performance of Trey Lyles, who scored 21 points in the first half alone, Mario Hezonia, who had a great performance, and Facundo Campazzo, who did not stop fighting.
The Royals led 65-61 late in the third quarter and hung on until the final moments, when Mario Velez managed to make it 88-88 with just 30 seconds left in regulation, a legendary comeback that nearly achieved the impossible.
“Olympiakos” won the fourth title
But Olympiakos, the best team in Europe this season, decided the match thanks to Evan Fournier (20 points) and Alec Pieterse (16 points) in the decisive moments to win their fourth European title after a 13-year wait and break the curse of the league leaders.
