For more than a century AGF has been located in the Royal Grove, known as the green heart of Aarhus.
Their stadium is currently being rebuilt, removing the athletics track, increasing the capacity from 20,000 to 24,000 and providing them with state-of-the-art facilities to host international matches.
AGF had the Superliga’s fifth-highest budget this season and the club said the economic benefits from their new stadium – due to be completed in March 2027 – would help them close the gap on Brondby, Copenhagen and Midtjylland.
Ironically, they managed to end their title drought while playing at a temporary base on the other side of town, which Majnikor-Hansen described as “Spartanic”.
The ground used to have 100 seats and a semi-professional team abandoned it because the pitch was so bad. AGF had to install a hybrid pitch, floodlights and 12,000 temporary seats. Only one stand has a roof.
But with fans so close to the pitch, it created an environment where the team thrived.
Poulsen was a different kind of leader than his predecessor Uwe Roesler, bringing a calmer approach. He changed formations from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 and possession-based play.
He moved Kristian Arnstad from defensive midfield into a more attacking role, helping put the 22-year-old in contention for Norway’s World Cup squad.
Former South Africa international Gift Links was a consistent threat on the left, with veteran striker Patrick Mortensen leading by example and Tobias Bech their top scorer, but AGF did not rely on any stars.
“We don’t have the best players in the league, but we have the best team,” said AGF supporter Jacob, who succeeded his mother Anja Lilly as chair of their fan club.
