Neither Daniel Dubois nor Fabio Wardley hope their WBO heavyweight world title fight will go the distance.
Dubois, who previously held the IBF championship, is determined to regain a world title belt. But he also hopes to do it in style.
He vowed that Wardley would not hear the final bell on Saturday. “I’m going to take him out, put him to sleep, take that belt,” Dubois said Sky Sports News.
“I’m just going to fight how I fight and all I do is hurt and bring pain. That’s all I’m going to do.”
Wardley was not as accomplished an amateur boxer as Dubois but had impressive wins as a professional, including stopping both Joseph Parker and Justice Hooney.
Dubois has been equally impressive. He blasted Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium and boxed Oleksandr UC twice, although he was stopped in both of those bouts.
He said of Wardley: “He was a decent fighter, but I’m going to show that there are layers. But he was decent, don’t take anything away from him.”
Dubois added: “You just watch and see. I’m going to show.
“I’m motivated, really motivated. I’m back from being champion and I’m going for it again, so I’m really ready for it.”
Wardley knows Dubois is a formidable opponent. “There are going to be some tough moments that I have to figure out at night,” he said Sky Sports News.
“We know very well that I cannot waste time. From the second bell I will fly across the ring and engage directly. So, we shall see if he comes to see me.”
Wardley was promoted from the interim title list to full WBO world champion without ever having the opportunity to fight in the ring for the belt he now holds. The Ipswich man will be looking to validate his status with a win over Dubois.
“I think it’s that crowning moment of hearing it in the ring at night, you’re handed the belt and it’s announced. I think that’s the one thing I miss so far,” he said.
“It’s special because, one, there’s not a long list of British heavyweight champions but the All-British dust up (for a heavyweight title) is a shorter list. There’s a special crowd there.”
Wardley looks to continue his streak and, if he beats Dubois, could target unified champion Usyk.
“With Alexander himself fighting in a few weeks, it’s hard to look ahead or at least look around and see what else could happen. But I’ve made sure that doesn’t distract me from Saturday night,” said the WBO champion.
“Then we can look to the future.”
