A rights group on Wednesday raised concerns about the safety of journalists and fans attending the 2026 World Cup in the United States, accusing FIFA of allowing a “clearly dangerous climate of fear” in the face of US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

According to Reuters, the Alliance for Sport and Rights said FIFA did not adequately address potential threats to human rights before the start of the huge sporting event, citing visa restrictions, tighter border controls and security force practices.

“FIFA’s weak response to human rights threats documented by local and global civil society organizations means we are witnessing a clearly dangerous climate of fear, uncertainty and oppression,” said Alliance Executive Director Andrea Florence.

“President Donald Trump’s harsh anti-human rights rhetoric, aggressive immigration policies and mass deportations have already cast a dark shadow over the world’s biggest sporting event,” he added.

He continued. “FIFA promised that this would be the most inclusive tournament in history. However, just seven days before kick-off, the reality for workers, fans, journalists and local communities looks very different.
