Dame Sarah Storey retires from international competition.

Great Britain’s most decorated Paralympian, Dame Sarah Storey, has made an early retirement from international competition.

The 48-year-old cyclist has opted not to compete at Los Angeles 2028 to focus on helping to improve para-sport.

The 19-time Paralympic champion feels the sport has stagnated somewhat since the London 2012 Games and many areas still need attention.

“The years between each Games were not used enough to create the motivation that I and others wanted to see,” she said.

“I see this as a milestone, there are still many areas of para-sport that need attention, which is a big factor in my decision.

I fully believe that I can make a bigger impact on my bike than chasing 10th Games and maybe more titles.

“I am happy to be a part of the future where we will put the necessary pressure to ensure that the future is bright for all para-athletes.”

Storey began her professional career at London 2012, winning a total of 30 Paralympic medals in nine games, including four golds, before moving to cycling in four games.

Lord Coe, President of World Athletics, who chaired the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “Parasport was a very important part of London 2012 and I am extremely proud of what we were able to deliver.

“However, the issues Dame Sarah raised about retirement resonated with me – sport must continue to take small but steady steps forward so that what has gone before is not wasted.”

The British Paralympic Association has been approached for comment.
