Jack Mulroe thinks The high-end theme market is boring. Focus on black, uniform-looking equipment; caught in the “real battles” to find out what it is excellent headsets. He just wants his California-inspired headphones to help people cool down.
“I just saw a way that there was a dead zone, frankly, in the headphone market, where the latest brand in culture was Beats,” says Mulroe. “It just felt old.”
Mulroe is the CEO and founder of a new voice brand called Daisy Soundwhich is located in California. It bills itself as “a group of industrialists from outside the audio industry” who want to shake up what’s already been heard on headphones. The Daisy One headphones, which were unveiled on Tuesday, are the company’s first product.
These retro-style headphones are designed to go head-to-head with large noise-canceling cans like Apple. AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM6. These are headphones that usually sell for $450 to $550. The Daisy One undercuts them a bit at $399. The goal is to sell headphones that are a little smaller than the big dogs.
“I knew we were going to be competing with the big guys: Sony, Bose, Beats, Apple,” says Mulroe. “I wasn’t really worried about that competition. But the competition is fierce in this area for the price tags, like from London-Nothing and its rips.” headphones and Anker’s Soundcore budget options (one of them passed WIRED’s blind test) to precious cans from Bowers & Wilkins or Group.

Daisy One looks great. Designed for strength and durability, they are made of aluminum with TR90 headplates, widely used by headphone manufacturers. (“You can wait,” says Mulroe, extending the belt.) They’re slightly heavier than their competitors at 318 grams, or about three-quarters of a pound. The headphones are turned on and off via a magnetic field. It works with Bluetooth and supports USB-C and 3.5-mm auxiliary cables. The headphones come in three different colors – silver, a shade of blue called Pacific, and a green shade called Kelp.
The designs are meant to evoke California chic, as most of the designers are based in the state. Some of Daisy’s co-workers are veterans who have Harman Professional SolutionsSamsung’s audio company. The actual sound system inside is made by a Utah company ((nxc)) systemswhich Daisy agrees with. Stored on the device are sounds recorded in California, like ocean waves or forests in Big Sur. There are also guided breathing exercises to help people relax in stressful environments like airports.
The Daisy One headphones have an average of 35 hours of battery life with the sound off and 45 hours with it off. Despite advertising that these are reliable headphones designed to last, there is no way to replace the battery. Mulroe says it’s something the company is working on for future models. The headphones have also received mixed reviews so far, and some are original testers on TikTok criticizing the visual aspect of the headphones – which allow you to hear what’s around you – says it leaves a lot to be desired. Mulroe is aware of that complaint and says it can be upgraded later via a software patch.
