Although a copy World Cup 2026 It hasn’t started yet, but FIFA is considering a new bid for the 2030 World Cup, which is being hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
Spanish newspaper AS reported on Thursday that FIFA was considering increasing the number of teams in the tournament to 64, saying it would be held in 2026 with 48 teams for the first time, as Qatar 2022 was the last under the old system (32 teams).
The proposal first surfaced a few months ago, after the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) demanded an increase in the number of participating teams, with the aim of giving teams that rarely appear on the world stage the chance to compete in football’s biggest event.
At that time, the idea did not go beyond the limits of pulse testing, but now it has started to gain new momentum with the support of some national federations, “AS” reports.
He explained. “An idea is still just a proposal that needs a lot of discussion before it becomes a reality, but what used to be seen as a ‘crazy idea’ is no longer treated the same way.”
It seems that FIFA has begun to consider the idea as a move that reflects the “inclusivity of football”, as Gianni Infantino always reiterates that the World Cup is a “global celebration”, especially for countries that have never participated in the tournament.
However, FIFA will not fully delve into the details of organizing the 2030 World Cup until after the 2026 edition.
The next edition, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will see first-time or infrequent teams such as Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan.
In another context, AS noted that the idea of holding the World Club Championship every two years is currently excluded.
The current proposal still remains to organize the next edition in 2029, while in the corridors of FIFA the idea of holding it every two years is currently considered irrelevant.
