County Championship: Craig Overton leads Somerset to big win over champions Nottinghamshire as Essex go top | cricket news

Craig Overton took five wickets as Somerset ignited their County Championship challenge and handed defending champions Nottinghamshire their first defeat of the season at Trent Bridge.

Starting the final day needing seven more wickets to claim their first win of the season, Somerset cruised to victory by 306 runs and Overton returned 5-29 in the second innings.

The hosts started the fourth day on 47-3, chasing an impossible 473 to win. But number one Fergus O’Neill was the only batsman to resist, scoring an unbeaten 54 as his side were bowled out for 166.

Essex Moved to the top of the table after shrugging off some stiff resistance of Leicestershire Lewis Hill deserved a six-wicket win at Grace Road.

Hill scored an unbeaten 127 and was the last man out as the hosts tried to make things difficult for the hosts in their follow-on, eventually being bowled out for 428.

But despite their earlier disappointment, Essex reached their target thanks to opener Paul Walter’s 110 as they chased down the target of 217 for the loss of four wickets.

Also in Division One, Sam Hayne’s heroics helped Warwickshire Put up for a draw against Yorkshire in Scarborough.

Chasing a notional 453 at 44-1, the visitors produced a strong batting display with Hayne scoring 69 and captain Ed Barnard a 58, before their lower order kept their two wickets intact.

Harrison steered Northants to a late victory

Hosts in Division Two Northamptonshire Completed a seven-wicket win in overs Gloucestershire, They reached the target of 191 runs with three wickets remaining thanks to Calvin Harrison’s unbeaten 92 runs.

Earlier, James Bracey led Gloucestershire’s resistance with an unbeaten 148 in their follow-on, while opener Cameron Bancroft’s 64 also helped the visitors make it a game.

Zafar Gohar finished the second innings with 6-31 Middlesex Completed a 141-run win against the hosts Worcestershire.

Worcestershire resumed their chase of 358 at 33-2, and Ben Allison led the resistance with a fine 89 before his dismissal triggered a collapse from 131-4 to 155-7, with the spinner doing most of the damage.
