County Championship: Ben Duckett scored 203 as Nottinghamshire drew with Surrey

England opener Ben Duckett maintained his early season form with an unbeaten 203 to settle for a draw against defending champions Nottinghamshire and potential title rivals Surrey County in the Championship after four days of exploits and at times high-intensity cricket.

The left-hander has scored 503 runs in seven innings so far following Duckett’s decision to focus on the domestic red-ball game ahead of the domestic international season.

It became the sixth double century of his first-class career – with 23 fours and a six and spanning just over six hours. It was his first triple-figure score in the Championship since April 2024, despite just five appearances for his county in that time.

After trailing by 34 runs in the first innings, Nottinghamshire led by 380 runs at 414-4 when the teams agreed to call it a day at 16:50 BST.

Both took 13 points from the match, enough to keep Nottinghamshire top of the Division One table after five matches.

The contest surprisingly did not match the drama witnessed at Kia Oval last September, when Nottinghamshire won what was effectively the championship decider, ending Surrey’s run of three successive titles, but still produced some high-quality cricket.

Joe Clarke’s brilliant first innings for the home side came in the toughest batting conditions in 129 matches, which Surrey’s Dan Worrall capitalized on with figures of 6-73 in his first appearance of the season after injury.

England’s Josh Tong (4-89) produced the stand-out bowling in Surrey’s first innings, with Dom Sibley’s hard-fought 77 and Dan Lawrence’s superb 104, countered by his third century of the season.

With Nottinghamshire 99-1 overnight, Surrey trailed by 65 runs on the final day but knew a decent clutch of wickets in the morning session could give them a chance.

In the event, they managed just one breakthrough before lunch, with Jordan Clarke catching Ben Slater at a fine edge for 50, taking the left-handed opener past 500 for the season. Surrey was certainly the first choice bowler after the withdrawal of England pacer Gus Atkinson on Sunday.

Reece Topley, Atkinson’s replacement, thought he had at least given Nottinghamshire a second push when Clarke accepted the invitation to make 25 but Dom Sibley, at deep backward square, could not hold on to the chance.

Duckett’s progress was halted just before lunch when a ball from Shaun Abbott rose up and hit the lower hand. Fortunately, he was able to continue after treatment.

Clarke, the Championship’s leading run scorer with 734, crossed his sixth consecutive innings fifty but a testing spell from Worrall after lunch denied him the chance to build on enough, falling for 59 before the leg.

But in an innings brimming with quality strokeplay, Duckett was to be denied the occasion, reaching his 31st first-class century and his 11th of the afternoon for Nottinghamshire in six overs, with 14 fours from 166 balls.

Against a strong attack, even with Atkinson out of the picture, it was a brilliant innings.

For all the trouble he suffered during the Ashes winter, Duckett’s England place was probably never under serious threat. But the form he has produced since taking the bold decision to turn down a lucrative Indian Premier League contract in favor of finding some red-ball form at home has certainly raised doubts.

His century took Nottinghamshire to a position from which, at other times in the season, they might have been weighing their options. A rematch at The Oval in August may be a different proposition but a draw at this stage suits both sides.

Duckett and Clarke added 119 runs with Clarke for the third wicket, after which Jack Haines posted his second half-century of the match, the pair swelled to 122 more and a misunderstanding resulted in Haines failing to complete a stop-start single before being run out as Ryan Patel’s throw from backward point beat him home.

In the conclusion Surrey turned to the bowlers at times, Duckett reached 200 with a four off Surrey captain Rory Burns.
