Cornwall has always been one of the hotbeds of rugby union, but the county has never had a top-flight team.
The Pirates have come the closest – reaching the championship playoff final in 2011 and 2012 – but have never cleared that final hurdle.
With the prospect of a franchise-based love in the next few seasons, a Cornwall-based team would be an enticing prospect to play and early investment could put the club in prime position for a place in the league in the future.
But there is a lot of work. The club’s Menay Field home in Penzance is nowhere near the standard required for love rugby and the club will need to vastly expand both on and off the field if they are to be able to compete at that level.
They have had their ambitious moments in the past. England’s 2003 World Cup winner Josh Lucci spoke of investment in infrastructure when he had a brief spell as chief executive in 2013 and Pirates had long-held ambitions to move to Cornwall’s stadium in Truro before that project fell by the wayside.
But the fact remains that without wealthy benefactors willing to finance champ teams, they will make losses. Sir Dickie Evans spent millions on the club over almost three decades before selling it to a locally based consortium in January 2025.
Will these be the owners who finally realize the Pirates’, and ultimately Cornwall’s, top-flight rugby potential? Only time will tell.
