Conor Benn’s world title fight against Ryan Garcia is close to being finalised, says the British competitor’s trainer Tony Sims.

Garcia announced earlier this month that he expects to make his first defense WBC welterweight title against Ben in Las Vegas on September 12.

But Sims, Benn’s longtime cornerman, insists contract terms still need to be agreed between the two fighters.

“What I’m being told is that the fight is still being negotiated, so the date or the venue hasn’t been done yet, but I think that’s where we’re headed,” Sims said. Sky Sports.

“Conor’s WBC is mandatory, so Ryan will have to defend against him at some stage. I think the fight is getting closer to being made now.”

Benn avenged the only loss on his record when he won a dominant points against bitter rival Chris Eubank Jr. last November.

The 29-year-old then prepared for Garcia with a wide points win over Regis Progress in April.

“Ryan Garcia is a great fighter. He’s up there with some great fighters,” Sims said.

“Obviously, Conor is going to be a huge underdog in that fight, but it’s a huge fight commercially – they’re both really big names.

“Ryan in America and Conor in the UK – huge names – and it’s a fight everyone wants to see

“Conor has to be disciplined, like he was in the second Eubank fight. He has to be disciplined in his technique and if the fight is fought, I believe Conor has a great chance to win the belt.”
