Connacht send Edinburgh to reach URC play-offs

Connacht United sealed a place in the Rugby Championship play-offs with a bonus-point win over Edinburgh.

A try from Josh Ione and a double from Shamus Hurley-Langton put the Irish 19-0 up.

Matthew Devine wrapped up the bonus point with a fourth try, with Ewan Ashman grabbing a late consolation for the hosts.

Connacht’s win moves them up to sixth in the URC table, with Edinburgh languishing in 12th.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Edinburgh hammered the Connacht line, only to be hit with a sucking punch.

Connacht rose from deep from turnover ball, kept the ball brilliantly and freed Ioan for the opening try.

After defending for most of the half, the visitors started to get a grip on things and Hurley-Langton ended the period under pressure on the Edinburgh line.

The flanker gave the scoreboard breathing room in the final act of the first half when he dived under the sticks for his second score.

Edinburgh burst through after the break with no way through a ferocious Connacht defense and were the architects of their own downfall as Connacht claimed their fourth try of the evening.

The ball was sent aimlessly along the backline before spilling into midfield. Substitute Devine reacted first, hacking the ball forward and gathering to get under the post to close out the game.

Duhan van der Merwe made a break from halfway and found Ashman who held off the covering defense to score, but it was little relief on a night when Edinburgh’s disappointing season ended in all-too-familiar fashion.
