It is the first time since the passage of the 1973 Armed Forces Resolution that both houses of Congress have passed a resolution ordering the president to end military action.
The passage is significant because it will add to the pressure the White House is facing to end the Iran war amid rising gasoline prices and growing public opposition to the war.
But a White House official told the BBC that the April 7 ceasefire agreement would not involve the withdrawal of US troops.
The official also said the measure passed only due to the absence of two Republican senators: Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick.
Four Republican senators voted with Democrats to support the resolution: Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Bill Cassidy.
Democratic Sen. John Fetterman was the only member of his party to dissent.
It was the latest sign of division among Trump Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections, ensuring the party retains slim majorities in both houses of Congress.
Some Republicans have recently opposed the president, including Rejection of the plans $1.8 billion (£1.3bn) to create an “anti-weapons” fund and Approval of Ukraine’s aid.
Tuesday’s vote was the 10th time since the start of the war that Senate Democrats have forced a vote on war powers.
It came the day the Pentagon asked Congress for $80 billion, most of it to pay for the war with Iran.
Federal law requires congressional authorization to continue military action beyond 60 days. The US-Israeli offensive against Iran began on February 28, although the Trump administration said it had reset the April ceasefire.
The White House could extend the deadline for an additional 30 days, citing national security.
Currently, the US and Iran have agreed to continue the ceasefire agreement and to end the war in A Memorandum of Understanding It was signed by the presidents of both countries last week.
On the same note, Washington and Tehran have 60 days to negotiate a broad agreement to end Iran’s nuclear program.
