Conceição blows. I got a champion on paper… and the leadership of the federation cheated me.

Portugal’s Sergio Conceicao, the former coach of Al-Ittihad, has opened fire on the conditions he experienced while in charge at the club, stressing that he found a completely different reality than what he was told before signing the contract.

The federation had announced Conceição’s dismissal a few days ago after he failed to win any titles and got into numerous clashes with players and fans.

Conceição said in televised announcements on Portuguese channel TVI that he had received promises to coach the league and cup champions, but the reality was different when he arrived in Jeddah.

The Portuguese coach explained. “They told me before I signed for Al-Ittihad that I would coach a championship team, but when I arrived I found a team full of problems. I was deceived.”

He noted that the season was difficult from the start, especially after the departure of a number of key pillars who played a key role in the team’s previous success.

“The season was difficult and the departure of Benzema and Kante had a big impact on the team and the federation suffered from organizational, administrative and structural problems.”

Conceicao emphasized that the crisis did not stop with the departure of the stars, but rather extended to the failure to properly compensate them, explaining:

When asked whether investments within the club were reduced during that time, the Portuguese coach expressed his belief in this matter.

“I think so, and it was further confirmed after the departure of the sporting director, Ramon Blanes. There were a lot of structural problems within the club and it got us into a dynamic that wasn’t good at all.”

Although he acknowledged the extent of the difficulties he faced, Conceicao denied that he left the federation in anger or frustration as he said: “No, I left the Federation with a different, very different experience.”

The Portuguese coach wanted to thank the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Al-Ittihad Club, stressing that his experience is rich at the professional and humanitarian levels.

“I thank Saudi Arabia and Al-Ittihad club and officials for giving me the opportunity to work there. I was introduced to a completely different work culture.”
