Commonwealth Games: Scotland secure first netball win over Wales

Scotland bounced back from defeat to New Zealand with a 56-47 win over Wales at The Hydro in Glasgow.

The hosts started brightly as they led 16-8 in the first quarter.

A good second quarter for the visitors saw Wales reduce the deficit to just two goals before Scotland took a 28-21 half-time lead.

Emma Barry’s dominant shooting saw Scotland take a ten-goal advantage in the final quarter.

Niamh McCall, a Welsh nine-man team-mate at Super League side Dragons, continues to cause problems with her shooting from distance.

Wales gave away too many contact penalties throughout the game to cut into the lead.

Scotland held firm to secure their first win of the Games.

They face 12th-ranked Trinidad and Tobago in their next match on Monday night.

Wales play the same opposition on Tuesday as they look for their first win in Glasgow.

Scotland goal attack Niamh McCall said:

“Excited, that’s what we noticed.

“We beat them in November, they’re ranked higher than us so to be able to do the double we’re very happy we won today.

“Kath (Tetley) always talks step by step so we take each day at a time and we’ll look back at today and what we can do better tomorrow in Trinidad and be very focused.

“We must use the crowd to our advantage, they are like an eighth player on the court for us, so the louder they can be the better and that was fantastic today.

Wales captain Bethan Dyke said:

“Bitterly disappointed, that first quarter is where we really let it go.

“I think there wasn’t much in it to come back in those other three quarters, the first quarter wasn’t good enough.

“We can’t get away from the fact that this is not where we wanted to be but there is still a lot to play for in this competition.

“We have a rest day tomorrow and we have to come back stronger in the next match.”
