Commonwealth Games: Katrina Johnson-Thompson injured – why athletes continue to isolate themselves?

British Olympic 800m. Champion Keely Hodgkinson skipped the event to prioritize the European Championships starting in Birmingham on August 10, leading many to question the event’s importance on the sporting calendar.

The European Championship squad is expected to be announced next week.

Saint Lucia’s 100m. Olympic champion Julien Alfred withdraws from Glasgow Games Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh, one of the sport’s biggest stars, is enjoying the Pan Pacific swimming championships.

With non-Commonwealth countries such as the United States, China and major European countries, some athletes prefer other, more competitive events.

These games were affected by the late confirmation of dates and schedules in October last year. The event was originally held in March, but the Australian state of Victoria has stepped down as host in 2023.

Speaking on Thursday, the organizers insisted that the event would be a success despite the absence of some celebrities.

Scottish Athletics’ medal hopes include new mile world record holder Josh Kerr and 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan, but Glasgow 2026 chief executive Phil Baty said the focus must be on young athletes.

“We’ve got an incredible field of athletes,” he said.

“It’s important to make sure we get these athletes at the peak of their career and you can see it in the sport.

“Just like what happened in 2014[the previous Glasgow Games]it’s great to see the athletes start that winning season.”

Commonwealth Sports chief executive Katie Sadlier said her organization would hold talks with other events in the future to create a clear window.

“This game was a bit of a challenge because we were only 18 months in and we were like, ‘Where’s the gap in two years?’ It was hard to say.

“There will be more conversations going forward.”
