Commonwealth Games: Glasgow roars for new Scottish heroes as Sandilands and Bryce claim glory

Megan Keith was the only Scottish representative in the women’s 10,000m after McColgan dropped out.

Despite cheers from the crowd at each pass, the Inverness runner was unable to replicate his compatriot’s iconic 2022 performance, finishing ninth in a time of 32:22.11.

Canada’s Olympic hammer champion Ethan Katzberg drew gasps of amazement from the Glasgow crowd with his Herculean throw of 80.97m, setting a Commonwealth record.

But the biggest cheers at the hammer were reserved for Scotland’s Chris Bennett, competing in his fourth and final Games.

He finished fifth with his longest throw of 69.48m, clearly emotional as he ended his 24-year career.

Alexander Thomson – who trains down the road at Victoria Park and has battled back from knee surgery – finished ninth in the T38 100m final.

Gemma Reckie comfortably made the semi-finals of the 800m, finishing second behind England’s world indoor 1,500m champion Georgia Hunter Bell in 2:03.09.

Erin Wallace also booked her place in the semifinals with a time of 2:03.15, but missed out by just 0.06 seconds after Mena Scatchard finished fourth in her heat.

In the preliminary session, Stephen McKenzie got Scotland off to a strong start as he advanced to the men’s long jump final on Wednesday.

A second round jump of 7.75m was enough to see him to eighth place.

Meanwhile, hammer thrower Angela McAuslan-Kelly advanced to the women’s final, securing her place with a first-round throw of 60.59m.
