Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026: Flagbearers confirmed for opening ceremony

Five-time Commonwealth champion bowler Alex Marshall and two-time judo champion Sarah Adlington will be Scotland’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday.

With five golds, one silver and one bronze, Marshall is Scotland’s most successful athlete at the Commonwealth Games, while Adlington is chasing an unprecedented third judo gold at the Games.

England’s flagbearers will be Cian Honour, a four-time medalist in bowls, and swimmer Luke Greenbank.

Boxer Rosie Eccles, who turns 30 on the day of the ceremony, and bowler Daniel Salmon are Wales’ flagbearers.

The Northern Ireland pairing will be confirmed on Thursday.

“It’s a huge honor and a great feeling,” Martial told BBC Sport.

“I don’t often get emotional but I definitely had tears in my eyes this morning.”

Honor said: “I didn’t know I’d been nominated until I had to choose who I wanted to be. I think being shortlisted for the Bowl is amazing and a great platform to play on.

“There are no words to be selected. I am absolutely honored to lead England in that way.”

Eccles said it was a “huge honour” as a tearful Salman spoke to the BBC.

“I’m still a little speechless,” Eccles said. “I feel extremely proud to represent Wales in any way but to carry the flag and lead some amazing athletes…”
