Commonwealth Games: Five big names to look out for in Glasgow 2026

Rhys McClenaghan has done it all.

The European, World, Commonwealth and Olympic champion on the pommel horse is undeniably one of the greats of the sport, but we were warned to expect ‘Rhys 2.0’ in Glasgow.

Northern Ireland’s gymnastics golden boy – who won Ireland’s first Olympic gymnastics gold in Paris two years ago – was forced to spend a spell on the sidelines last year with a shoulder injury, but is set to bring a new training career to Glasgow.

“The Commonwealth Games is a great opportunity to showcase your work in progress. At the Olympic Games, you want to see the finished product,” he said.

“It’s a work in progress, but hopefully it’s the best in the world.

“Part of me is trying to be like a younger Rhys, but the reality is I’m doing a whole new routine and the rule changes have pushed me in that direction, that’s Rhys 2.0.”

McClenaghan won gold eight years ago, beating Britain’s Max Whitlock – He was forced to leave these games due to injury – Four years ago before collecting silver in Birmingham.

He was the first gymnast to complete the Grand Slam and arrives at these Games as Team NI’s Wise Old Hyde – despite being just 26.

It’s a scary prospect for the rest of the field. Even scarier is the reboot for version 2.0.
