Commonwealth Games 2026: Team Wales go for gold in Glasgow

As the games have been slightly delayed on this occasion, comparisons with previous events would be unfair.

So there will be no medal target.

“We don’t talk about medals but I’d be lying to you if I said it wouldn’t be incredible,” Team Wales chef de mission Gethin Jones said.

“I have some flags in my bag, just in case, so I can throw them out.

“All I can say is that every single athlete has come here to represent Wales with pride and passion. I know they will be out there giving it their all.”

Jones said it was about giving Team Wales the chance to perform at their best.

“A lot of people talk about success,” Jones said.

“Within teams, they have their own conversations.

“As a Wales team, it’s about giving them the chance to succeed and success is being able to deliver your best performance on the day when it matters, under pressure, with the whole world watching.

“If they do, I don’t think you can ask for much more.

“If you get a personal best, that’s success for me, making sure they’re given the environment to be able to do that.

“We’ll be proud of them, because we know the sacrifices, the work and the sacrifices they’ve made. So I know they want to go.”

Wells chose a high-profile chef de mission for the television presenter but Jones helped Tim Wells build a little house in a hotel in Scotland, not an ambassadorial role.

“After all the preparation over the last 18 months or so, it’s great for the team to be here,” Jones said.

“We hit the ground running. It feels like we’ve been here for a month trying to get everything ready.

“There’s a lot of work to be done to make sure all the logistics, preparations and rooms are ready when the athletes arrive.”
