Commonwealth Games 2026: Boxer Rosie Eccles and bowler Daniel Salmon named as Team Wales holders


Reigning Commonwealth Games champions Rosie Eccles and Danielle Salmon have been chosen as Team Wales’ flag and baton bearers for the opening ceremony in Glasgow.

Boxer Eccles and bowler Salmon were surprised by the news from Team Wales chef de mission Gethin Jones.

Eccles will celebrate his 30th birthday by carrying the flag and leading Wales at the Hydro on Thursday night.

“I don’t think I stopped laughing, I was speechless and that doesn’t happen very often,” Eccles said.

“It’s unreal, a massive honour. I’m very proud to represent Wales again anyway and to win gold for the team.

“But then carrying the flag and leading some amazing athletes, it doesn’t get much better than that.”

Eccles recalls Olympic cycling champion Gerant Thomas carrying the flag in Birmingham four years ago.

“I remember how proud he must have been and I never thought I could be in the following games,” Eccles said.

“I’m surprised they chose me.”
