From the silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games to his Olympic, world and European gold, Daniel Wiffen said finishing second in Birmingham still “sits on top of my head”.
Ultra-competitive by nature, Wiffen acknowledged that the Games four years ago were the springboard for the unprecedented success that followed at the 2024 Paris Games, including 800m gold and 1500m bronze.
That is why, two years from the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, she is looking forward to this year’s Games in Glasgow, where she will compete in the 400m, 800m and 1500m and aim to add more gold medals to her growing collection.
“I think we had a three-year plan after Tokyo (the 2021 Olympics) and the first one was a medal at the Commonwealth Games. You tick the first thing off the list and you’re on your way. That was the catalyst that started my swimming career,” he told BBC Sport NI.
“The Commonwealth Games silver is sitting on top of my head because I want to win it but I’ve always said in 2026 I want to win every competition.
“I had a bit of a drought before the Europeans and I haven’t been in my top form for like a year and I think the Commonwealth Games, I’m looking forward to getting my release and getting a gold medal, at least one and to be honest, I want three but I’ll have to see.”
