Colin from Accounts season 3 review – TV’s cutest romcom comes to a funny, emotional end | Australian TV

Colin from Accounts is one of those shows that sounds amazing on paper: a romantic comedy about two people who connect through a cute group that includes a cute dog (and a car, and a tip). This leads to the old “will they or won’t they?”, where the answer is usually: well, who cares? As it turned out, most of us paid attention when we started talking to the medical student Ashley (Harriet Dyer), the owner of the brewery Gordon (Patrick Brammall) and, of course, their taciturn borderline admirer, Colin, whose full name is real. Colin from Accounts.

I would venture to say this: the pooch doesn’t really need, well, anything; that’s the kind of joke. Given Dyer and Brammall and a real familymaybe it’s understandable that they would share if the effort on the screen works – but then again Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez got married when the production of Gigli is for him almost as much electricity as several of the filing cabinets.

It also helps that Dyer and Brammall are the writers and co-creators of the show, allowing them to play to their strengths, tying every exchange to their quirky and magical style. He brings to the conversation an easy flow and an amazing ability to connect between comedy and drama: the show can be laugh out loud one minute, sad and dramatic one minute.

The third and final season begins with a repeat of the ending of the second series, which was difficult – very much challenge – with Gordon on one knee, in front of a packed soiree, asking Ashley to marry him. He replies, “We can talk about this later”, which means “no”.

The timeline jumps three years, the two meet again unexpectedly when Gordon goes to see a doctor, Ashley is now a doctor. We learn that they haven’t seen each other all these years and Gordon, who sold his beer, made the wrong choice. “Proves ax throwing and drinking don’t mix,” he says – one of many examples of a funny line delivered in a show that gets to the heart. You can feel the tension between them; and distance between them; the stubbornness of two people who used to know each other well.

From a narrative perspective, this revision brings us back to the beginning, to the familiar starting question: “Will they or won’t they?” And because we are so busy, viewers may not realize how the premise of the show is: beautiful encounter → dating → breakup → relationship.

Both Gordon and Ashley have new boyfriends, even in romantic comedies that aren’t complicated; some lovers are just placeholders, keeping the proverbial seat warm. In other words, Dyer and Brammall take the easy way out, showing Ashley and Gordon with very different personalities. Ashley’s new beau, David (Thomas Cocquerel), is – breath! – allergic to dogs, which brings him to the dust, and Gordon’s girlfriend, Chelsea (Nikki Shiels), is… “I’ve had a lot of help to stop you from seeing everything.”

But then again, these Johnny-and-Janes-coming soon are cannon fodder, and we don’t care if we never see them again. We care deeply about those set up, including Gordon’s friends and co-workers at the factory, Chiara (Genevieve Hegney) and Brett (Michael Logo), who have been working with him for so long they are like family. It’s Ashley reality The family, very tragically, includes his mother, Lynelle (Helen Thomson), and her husband, Lee (Darren Gilshenan), who is still swept up in the movement for men’s rights, leading the group Women Against Women Against Men (Wawam for short).

This season’s lead actors, Trent O’Donnell and Madeleine Dyer, continue the seemingly simple music, enhanced by Dyer and Brammall’s writing, which maintains the high standard already established. two weather. Only four of the eight episodes have been released to the press, so I expect the team to lean on it. There’s no reason to think they won’t: Colin from Accounts continues to be one of television’s most charming romcoms.
