Defending French Open champion Coco Gough suffered a third-round shock at Roland-Garros as world No. 4 Anastasia Potapova was beaten 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.
Gough struggled to cope with the aggressive tennis of 28th seed Potapova but won the opening set, only for her opponent to come back strongly in the next two and secure victory.
Potapova upset Goff with powerful baseline hits and was broken at love in the opening game, then took a 4-2 lead before the American stormed back to take the first set with four games on the spin.
Potapova immediately stepped up the pressure again to take a double break at the start of the second set. The Austrian was on the verge of equalizing at 5-2, but Goff came back.
He once again went through the gears to claim four consecutive games, only to lose the next and then the set in a tiebreak where his serve let him down.
The pair went to a thrilling decision break, but Goff eventually lost her way as Potapova took control and went on in style to meet 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya in the fourth round.
“He was able to finish the point and I wasn’t,” Goff said. “Not just capitalizing on some shots.”
Goff’s second Grand Slam title came a year ago with a win over top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the final at Roland Garros.
World number 30 Potapova, who was born in Russia but now represents Austria, improved to 3-2 in her career against Gauff. He has had quite the season on clay after reaching a final in Linz, Austria and the semifinals of the Madrid Open as a qualifier.
Fourth-ranked Goff made a run to the Italian Open final. She was beaten by Elina Svitolina in Rome – another player who could match her in a long rally.
