Real Madrid star Fede Valverde of Uruguay has broken his silence on his country’s World Cup exit.
Uruguay crashed out of the 2026 World Cup at the start of the group stage, finishing third in Group H with two points after draws with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde and losses to Spain.
Valverde wrote on his Instagram microblog: “It’s been a few days since the relegation and I’ve only now come to terms with everything I’ve been through, although I know a part of me may never get over another first-round exit like the World Cup in Qatar. That hole is still stuck inside me.”
“I feel a huge responsibility towards my country. It is an honor that fills my soul with pride. I did everything I could, prepared myself physically and mentally, tried not to repeat what happened before and worked hard all season. But it is clear that it was not enough.”
Valverde emphasized. “I take the defeat and take full responsibility for not fulfilling my duty to the national team and to you.”
He noted: “I bear the responsibility for this failure and I know that I was not at the level of responsibility, but in no case will I refuse to represent my country, even if it costs my life.”
He concluded. “I don’t know how or when, but I swear to you on my life that I will not leave this team until I put him in the position he deserves, at the top.”
