Monday’s turnout shows how quickly the movement has grown since the first protests in June, which were more than a nascent online campaign. Since then, it has spread across cities in India, gaining support from students, professionals, activists and opposition politicians.

But in the evening, the mood changed.

The police entered the Jantar Mantar and announced over loudspeakers that the protesters were not allowed to stay. The officers then began pushing people back, prompting some protesters to flee while others linked arms and refused to leave.

There was brief confusion over Deepak’s whereabouts after the CJP first announced his arrest. The group said the police later tried to take him into custody but were prevented by protesters. The Delhi Police later refuted the claim, calling the allegations “completely false”.
