His constant mania, familiar to him viral videos as a Tory backbencher, he suggests a Thick of It character, though there are occasional distractions from Michael Lambourne such as the Churchillian sneer – and face – of urine: WC is played by WC. Discuss toilet humor.
A similar reality to Rachel Reeves-less, although Keir Starmer remains the PM between discussions of “Team Wes” and “Team Andy”, Holt plays the chancellor who faces the same problems as Reeves. His early opposition to the urinal was deliberately misinterpreted by the mainstream media as a rejection of Churchill’s principles. When he accidentally drops a truth bomb, by describing the former PM as a “turd”, it only adds to the controversy. By the second half of Daniel Clarkson’s production, the world is in chaos and the deranged chancellor is now feeding vodka from a urinal. “Come to Winnie,” he shouts.
Holt’s essay, with additional material by Stewart Lee, makes clear points about how cyberbullying is a threat to female politicians. The film also shows a little bit of pro-Churchill myth-making, with Darkest Hour appearing to be the dominant one. This is a mistake, however, in a shambolic night that often relies on name checks (Michael Fabricant! Isabel Oakeshott! John Nettles!) rather than recognition or laughs.
It’s a tragedy for the show to open as Saturday Night Live UK has brought power back to politics. Even if it weren’t, one would have to say that many of Michael Gove’s jokes, not to mention the telephone mix-up that seems to have lasted longer than the last Tory government, are perfectly reasonable to take the piss.
