Christian Eriksen is conscious after collapsing in Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine.
Footage showed Eriksen clutching his chest before collapsing in the 65th minute. The match in the Danish city of Odense was later abandoned.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” Federation X said in a statement.
Denmark’s national team doctor Morten Boesen, who is credited with saving Eriksen’s life when he collapsed in 2021, gave another update.
“Christian is doing well and has left the pitch by himself,” he added. “As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly and we quickly contacted him.
“He will undergo further tests at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in touch with him and the doctors at the hospital.
“But Christian is doing well, and asked me to send his best wishes to all the players and he is fine.”
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjörg was on the field when Eriksen fell on Sunday. He said TV 2: “There’s a throw-in. I go to the side and turn around a little bit, and I see Christian on his way to the floor. We know a little bit how he reacts, what that means.
“(Everyone) responded super-quickly and respectfully. I can only admire the courage of those who took care of Christian on the field.
“I can’t say enough about the shock you’ve had. The most important thing is that Christian is doing well.”
Players from Denmark and Ukraine quickly formed a ring around Eriksen as medics attended to him.
At the end of the game, players and coaching staffs from both teams stood hand-in-hand as Denmark coach Brian Rimmer thanked them.
“The most important thing is that Christian is doing well and he is. He left the field and sent his best wishes to the players,” Rimmer said.
“Now it’s about us standing together, as you can see we did on the field in the most dignified way. So it’s now about standing together and definitely making sure everyone has a shoulder to lean on from here.”
In 2021, Eriksen collapsed during a European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen and was given life-saving CPR after suffering a heart attack.
He was later fitted with a special heart-starting device known as an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
Following his recovery, Eriksen was unable to play for Inter Milan, having joined from Tottenham in 2020, due to Italian rules prohibiting players from competing while fitted with an ICD. His contract ended in 2021.
Eriksen returned to English football in January 2022 with Brentford before joining Manchester United that summer.
He made 107 appearances and scored eight times for United, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
Eriksen left the club at the end of his contract in 2025 and currently plays for German side Wolfsburg.
