China’s shark fishing could lead to US seafood sanctions

Harvested fins are often shipped to Hong Kong, a special Chinese province that serves as the world’s largest trading center for shark fins. Although there are restrictions on the consumption of shark-fin food at official Chinese government events, this does not constitute a national ban, the report concluded.

“If China refuses to adopt similar protections, then the US must use the tools provided by Congress, including import restrictions,” Olivera said, highlighting that the next step is for China to adopt shark protection measures similar to US law. “The goal of this petition is to make shark conservation policies real, not arbitrary.”
