China’s Moonshot stole AI from Anthropologie, says Trump’s tech adviser

A White House adviser has accused China’s Moonshot AI of a massive effort to steal the capabilities of advanced US artificial intelligence (AI) models.

According to US President Donald Trump’s science and technology adviser Michael Kratios, Moonshot AI ran the campaign on what’s known as distillation – when a weak AI model extracts the answer from a strong one.

Moonshot gained access to restricted Nvidia servers to train the models. Kratsios said in a social post, External On Wednesday.

The BBC contacted Moonshot, the Chinese embassy in Washington, Anthroponic, the White House and Nvidia for comment.

Kratsios said on X that he had information that the US government’s Moonshot AI had “borrowed” capabilities from Anthropic’s Fable AI to develop the K3 model.

Kratsios’ accusations come a day after Finance Minister Scott Bessant said on Tuesday the United States would investigate whether Chinese AI models stole capabilities from American rivals.

On Wednesday, Besant said sanctions “will be on the table” when Chinese companies “cross the line” into intellectual property (IP) theft and carry out “industry-level censorship attacks.”

“We support open source AI and the innovation it opens up. But open source is not open season on American IP,” Besant said on social media.

The Chinese government has yet to issue an official statement in response to the latest allegations, but previously said the country’s AI development was “the result of its own determination and efforts as well as international cooperation.”

The US investigation into Chinese AI companies also comes as Trump is expected to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in September.

Moonshot AI will release the Kimi K3 as an open source model on July 27, making it the first model that can be freely downloaded and customized by developers and members of the public.

In June, Anthropic sued Chinese e-commerce and technology giant Alibaba “Illicitly” exploiting the capabilities of Claude’s AI models Using distillation attacks.

Anthroponic has urged Congress to punish the companies behind the attacks and increase protections against the theft of American technology.

In a memo issued at the time, Kratios said the campaigns were aimed at “systematically undermining US research and development and obtaining proprietary information.”
