Over the past year, Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures have been releasing sneak peeks and teasers for Nolan’s upcoming movie franchise. The Odysseybased on Homer’s poem. The studio has just dropped a new two-and-a-half-minute trailer full of glorious visuals, intense emotion, and an epic soundtrack that’s sure to rank high.
Like it has already been saidmost of us read some kind of The Odyssey high school, so we know the story well: Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, begins a long journey home after 10 years of fighting in the Trojan War. But the journey does not go well, as Odysseus and his men encounter the cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and a fortune teller named Circe, among other obstacles. Meanwhile, his long-suffering wife, Penelope, fends off hundreds of suitors who want to usurp Odysseus’ role.
Nolan loves the classic myth and compares it to Homer’s Odyssey for today’s top movies on the latest release on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “Even the culture of comic books, whether you’re talking about Marvel or DC or anything else, a lot of it comes from the Homeric Epics,” Nolan told Colbert. “The thing about Homer is, no one knows if he was human.
Matt Damon stars as a wandering Ithacan king. The cast includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope; Tom Holland as Odysseus’ son, Telemachus; Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of Penelope’s many suitors; Jon Bernthal as the Spartan king, Menelaus; Benny Safdie as the Achaean leader of the Trojan War, Agamemnon; John Leguizamo as Odysseus’ faithful servant, Eumaeus; Himesh Patel as his second-in-command, Eurylochus; Will Yun Lee and Jimmy Gonzales as workers; and Mia Goth as Penelope Melantho’s maid. We also have Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Lupita Nyong’o in a yet-to-be-revealed role.
