Charli xcx’s portrait has been added to the National Portrait Gallery, the week she hopes to get the No 1 chart for her new album Music, Fashion, Film.

The photo taken by Harley Weir was recorded in 2023 and became one of the main images associated with the era of Charli’s Brat: the album of 2024 which became famous in its culture due to its false and sexual content.

Brandei Estes, chief curator of portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, said the gallery was “delighted” with the purchase. Charli is “one of the cultural figures of her generation”, he said, and Weir “has created a unique artistic language that combines intimacy with powerful presence”.

The painting is on display in the History Makers Now space, and its purchase was funded by a gift from the Bukhman Foundation.

Charli’s Music, Fashion, Film album has been a hit and a success since it was released on Friday, with the Guardian describing her as “our most persistent winner” in the. five star review. It would be his fourth UK No 1 and second this year, after his song Wuthering Heights topped the chart in February.
