This is the story of a girl named Lucky. Early in the morning, he wakes up – knocking, knocking, knocking, at the door. It’s the FBI, and they’re chasing him across the country for stealing $10m. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thinking about the new Apple TV series (starting Wednesday), with stars Anya Taylor-Joybeing a play on the song Lucky by Britney Spears. I have tried to find a connection between the two and, as you can see, it is a stretch.
The seven-part show falls into the category of “the last heist” – but interestingly, it starts the morning after. Our antiheroine stands on the roof of a casino hotel in Las Vegas, after stealing millions, and burns to a new, legitimate life. A few hours later, Lucky appears to have been betrayed by the man she loves. He is forced to run, penniless, from both the authorities and the enforcers of the crime lords – who are collecting another debt owed by his gangster father. I think what’s happening in Vegas won’t stop there.
The last point is to choose wisely. Crime capers of the Ocean’s Eleven diversity, motivated by personal gain, reads risk as meaningless and meaningless. A reluctant last stand, illustrated by a Clint Eastwood movie Unforgiventhey have more depth. Forced by circumstances beyond his control, the mutant villain has returned to the throne, relying on the weapons he left behind. We enjoy their badassery because of the many virtues, bought by the mistakes that plague them.
Trying to walk the straight path, Lucky can’t get over the sins of his father, the smooth-talking John Armstrong, who made him the criminal he is. John is always in Lucky’s head, giving advice on pinching valuables, avoiding food and distracting people. Read the room. Don’t trust anyone. And there are no shortcuts. His fatherly advice helps him cope with life or death situations. But it is also because of them, the chain of life that they want to leave.
How much responsibility does Lucky have in his life? His problem is “a series of bad decisions over a long period of time”, he tells his mother-in-law – who is also not a good role model, let’s say. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga proved that Taylor-Joy has the power to lead, but I was reminded of many. The Queen’s Gambithow his injured chess master uses and loses everyone to give. Taylor-Joy seems to enjoy characters that refuse to be comfortable, or just focus on beauty.
Lucky steals children, sets people on fire, lies as easily as breathing. He plays the victimized feminist card with confidence, selling out the women who trust him. He’s also undeniably cool, jumping off the roof of trucks, ducking in and out of different people to avoid capture or save a room at night. He is talented and passionate. If there’s one thing we love more than people being kind, it’s good people. Just because you’re not good, doesn’t mean you’re not great.
As if doubling down on unknown values, we find Timothy Olyphant like Dilf bound by Lucky. Olyphant I can’t help but to be attractive, especially now he let his hair silver, and like a wolf in the land. I also find his name very interesting. He sounds like a Disney character. What is his relationship with the elephant? Did he marry or was he born that way?
Lucky can’t sleep on the floor. He’s played by an actor with a face so good-looking people around the zip code are staring. There is no difference in the way Lucky looks down, hiding behind his hair, which he has also dyed with a bright peroxide color. He might even wear a Michael Jackson face mask.
But trustworthiness is not the point; happiness is. The show offers cat-and-mouse fun, sophisticated instruments, explosive instruments and Fiona Apple’s theme song: a catchy, Bond-esque banger, in which she envies being “born in cow horns” and becoming a reader. This v nurture environmental experiment seeks to leave its criminal past behind. I want him to keep running, retaliating and kicking ass like someone is saving it. Unfortunately for him, I suspect only one of us will be lucky.
