Challenge Cup final: How Ulster progress after Bilbao heartbreak against Montpellier?

Ulster finished second best but there were fleeting positives, from Timney’s blistering start to a superb individual finish from the returning Robert Balukown.

But there was also the lingering ‘what if?’. What if Jack Ward’s missed tackle didn’t open up space for Montpellier’s opening try? Would things have changed if Harry Sheridan had held onto the ball as it fell towards the line or Tom Stewart had not overturned his line-out?

All the small moments played a role behind the defeat.

However, in truth, given Montpellier’s clinical edge and dominance in the pack, it probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference over the course of 80 minutes.

As the Ulster players sank to their knees at full-time, pain plastered across their faces, they faced one of the toughest tasks in their sport as they watched Montpellier lift the silverware they had long coveted.

“If you look at where Montpellier sit and the teams they’ve beaten in the last few weeks, they’re one of the best teams in Europe,” added Murphy.

“We’re disappointed but we’ll get back together to see it through before we break up.”
