The killing of two army officers in Chad comes after a recent attack in the same region that killed many people.

Chad has declared three days of national mourning after a Boko Haram An ambush in the Lake Chad Basin on Wednesday left two army officers dead.

The Lake Chad region, rich in water and a wetland with isolated islands, shared between Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad, has seen an increase in activity in recent months by Boko Haram’s JAS group, including kidnappings and attacks on security forces.
The islands and wetlands of Lake Chad also provide a breeding ground for Boko Haram’s splinter group, the ISIL in West Africa Province (ISWAP).
In October 2024, a military attack in the Lake Chad Basin by Boko Haram killed about 40 Chadian soldiers.
President of Chad Mahamat Deby responded to the killings by launching an anti-terrorist campaign to “destroy Boko Haram’s harmful forces”.
After the operation ended in February 2025, the army said Boko Haram “no longer has sanctuary in Chad” but security attacks will continue.
