Celtic transfer news: Martin O’Neill confident Camilo Duran deal will only be start of summer signings | football news

Martin O’Neill expects Celtic’s transfer business to accelerate with Camilo Duran on the verge of becoming the club’s first new summer signing.

After undergoing a medical, the 24-year-old will join the Hoops for a fee in the region of £6m in 2025-26 following a fruitful campaign with Qarabag where he scored five Champions League goals.

Veteran midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has agreed a new one-year deal after initially joining on a short-term deal in January, but fans are growing frustrated with the club’s lack of transfer business ahead of the new season.

“We have a lot of players we’re looking at,” O’Neill said.

“We also received several offers for players at the same time.

“And I’m hoping in the not too distant future, and I mean in the next few weeks, we’ll have some really decent players at the football club to add to our very decent players.”

Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers played in the first half of the 1-1 draw with Shelbourne – in which both sides scored late penalties – as he made his first appearance since October after rupturing his Achilles.

“At first, I just thought I had a little cramp in my calf,” the United States international said of the injury sustained in the Europa League win over Sturm Graz.

“Not long after that, when the physios looked at it, they thought it was a ruptured Achilles, which it turned out to be. Obviously at that point, you know it’s going to be a long-term injury.

“For me, it was about understanding the situation you’re in and getting back in the best shape and working in the best way possible.

“It’s just not getting too ahead of yourself and chasing small gains and being happy with small gains. I was in a cast for three weeks then a boot for eight.

“At the beginning of rehab you can’t really move your leg in any way, so right then, when I got some movement in my leg, it was about taking it as a win and being positive about it and then you’re chasing the next thing and the next thing.”

Chris Sutton admits ‘a lot of changes’ are needed at Celtic and gives an estimate of how much the club could spend in the summer transfer window

Chris Sutton believes Celtic may need to spend more than £50m overhauling their squad this summer if they are to retain their Premiership title and challenge for the Champions League.

“Martin did wonders last season. I’ve never seen Celtic win the title from the position he’s been put in on a number of occasions,” he said. Sky Sports News.

“I mean, the run at the end of the season was fantastic but I still think you can’t get away from the fact that Celtic need to make a lot of changes in terms of recruitment.

Could Daizen Maeda leave Celtic this summer?

“They’ve got Champions League qualification which is really important and, as exciting as it was for Celtic fans to get over the line last season, you can’t get away from the fact that Celtic have struggled at times throughout the season. Martin will look, I’m sure, to bring in players.

“It will be interesting to see who leaves Celtic. It looks like Rio will go to Hata, maybe Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels but they are big players for the team. Will Celtic replace players like that? Celtic will probably have to spend £50 or more because really spend more than £50.”
