“In October, I was having a coffee in the King’s Road in London, enjoying a break. I thought the days of lifting trophies here at Celtic Park were well and truly gone.
“It’s been really exciting for me. I really can’t believe it.”
Given the way Celtic supporters hold him up, there will inevitably be questions over whether O’Neill will be in the role next season.
Asked directly amid the post-match celebrations at Parkhead, the former Leicester City, Aston Villa and Sunderland manager refused to commit.
“I really don’t know,” he said. “Has anyone spoken to me? No, but I wasn’t expecting it. There will be time for conversation after the cup final.
“I’m quite old so it takes it out of you. I’m a little bit involved in the proceedings. They see me every day at the players, this old guy and think ‘What’s he doing here?’
“This is the most special place in the world. When the absolute match is in this stadium, it is a sight to behold.
“Obviously the players are great, reflected by the captain, but we couldn’t have won it without (the fans). I’m delighted for them.
“Let’s see what next week brings.”
