Celtic can win the double – but is change inevitable?

There is at least one arguable case for Celtic to be strong favorites to win the league after Rodgers’ departure.

On that basis, has O’Neill done enough to return as manager next season? Is his future in winning the Premiership? Should Celtic look to the future? Does O’Neill want to continue managing in such a difficult environment at the age of 74?

Now these are unanswered questions, at least outside the walls of Celtic Park.

Asked about his future, O’Neill told talkSPORT on Tuesday: “It feels like a renaissance, to come back and work with the youngsters, it’s really, really scary.”

“We have to see how we stand at the end of the season, and that’s up to us now.”

While they have praised O’Neill for his already popular presence, some Celtic fans feel a new face is needed in the dugout.

Paul John Dykes, from A Celtic’s State of Mind podcast, believes O’Neal should “go away and chill and enjoy retirement” at the end of the season.

“Martin O’Neill has been horribly humiliated by the Celtic board,” Dykes told the BBC’s Scottish Football podcast.

“There’s no way he came to Celtic in January, one week into the January transfer window, with four loans and an out-of-contract player promising to win the double, no chance.

“So whatever happens, Martin O’Neill’s legacy is intact.”
