Weir joined from Manchester City in 2022 but was sidelined for a year in September 2023 after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Scotland against Belgium.
“With the support of you and my teammates, manager, staff, friends and family, I overcame my knee injury, the biggest setback of my career,” he said on Instagram.
“You also gave me the freedom to become the player and person I am today. I will always be grateful for that.”
News of his departure comes two days after he led Scotland to top spot in World Cup qualifying with seven goals in their last two wins over Israel.
Weir, who has netted 31 times in 121 appearances for his country, won silverware with both City and Arsenal but trophies eluded him at Madrid amid Barcelona’s dominance, although he was twice voted club player of the season and last year’s Ballon d’Or Feminine nominee.
“It’s time for me to leave this special club,” he said. “I do this with a heart full of love, remembrance and gratitude.
“My only regret is that I couldn’t give you the first title. So I’m sad to say goodbye but also excited to watch from afar and see this club continue to grow.”
