Anticipated match between “Al-Akhdar” and the African national team at the end of the group stage
Cape Verde defender Pico Lopez has confirmed that his country will treat Saudi Arabia with the same respect as it treated Spain in their World Cup qualifier.
Saudi Arabia will face Cape Verde at dawn on SaturdayIn the third, last round of the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the NRG Stadium in Houston, USA.
Lopez said at the meeting’s press conference, I quote Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat“We’ve had amazing support from all over the world. It was really special. It’s hard to believe we even made it here.”
He added: “Qualifying for these tournaments is based on merit. You have to work hard and the federation has certainly put in a lot of effort to provide the best talent. It wasn’t easy, but we never stopped believing.”
“We got a great point against Spain and there is belief and confidence in this team that we are capable of competing with the best teams in the world.”
He continued. “Maybe the game against Saudi Arabia is a match where both teams thought they could get a positive result and they wanted to get the three points, but nothing has changed.”
He concluded. “We will try to win and see what happens next. There are no weak teams here. We will show Saudi Arabia the same respect we showed Spain and Uruguay.”
The match is considered crucial for both teams as both need to win to qualify for the round of 32 of the World Cup without waiting for the third-placed teams from the other groups.
Saudi Arabia is in the fourth and last place in Group 8 with one point and one point behind Uruguay and Cape Verde, while Spain is the leader with 4 points.
