Canon has announced the new EOS R6 V mirrorless camera, a 32.5-megapixel camera with 7K video. It’s the first EOS-brand camera with the V moniker, meaning it’s designed for video recording. The R6 V was launched by EOS R6 Mark IIIbut it eschews things like a screen and mechanical shutter in favor of compact size and fan-assisted cooling. It will cost $2,499 for the body alone ($300 less than the R6 Mark III) when it launches in late June.
The R6 V’s full-frame sensor is said to have more than 15 adjustable settings, and it can shoot 7K RAW video or 4K video (up from 7K maximum) at up to 60p. Native 4K video can go up to 120p, and 2K recording supports 180p resolution. The R6 V also supports 3:2 open gate photography to cover the canvas from corners and angles, allowing for greater flexibility in post-production.
One of the advantages of a mirrorless video camera is the added features like the R6 V’s second mount, tally lights, front-facing recording button, and multi-color LCDs that can be pointed forward for selfies (and UI elements). Pro users will appreciate that Canon also includes waveform monitoring, false color, and multi-screen displays for more information.
Set alongside the R6 V is a new lens, the $1,399 RF 20-50mm f/4 L IS USM PZ. It provides all of them dynamic zoom and manual viewfinder controls, adjustable with a physical switch. Canon is billing the lens as having the same or better image quality as the popular RF 24-105mm f/4 L lens, which is a staple of many enthusiasts and professionals. But what’s really interesting about the 20-50mm is that it doesn’t have a break and that its zoom and focus are in – making it perfect for mounting on a gimbal since its center of gravity doesn’t change. You can control its dynamic scaling through the app. Neatly.
