The Canadian Grand Prix was the race where Formula 1’s title fight finally came alive this year.
It was also a race in which George Russell’s 19-year-old Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli’s hopes of winning the championship were dealt a major blow.
Russell’s retirement from the race came after a frenetic 30-lap battle between the pair, which saw Circuit Gilles Villeneuve challenge the unlikely decision to start the race on a dry track on wet weather tires on a wet, overcast and very cold day.
Russell’s retirement handed Antonelli his fourth consecutive win, with the Italian now leading by 43 points.
There is no doubt that there will be plenty of twists and turns in the remaining 17 runs. However, that requires a bit of recovery.
Afterwards, Russell was fierce but understandably defeated.
“Now it’s his to lose,” he said. “He is so many points ahead. When I look at the time of the safety car in Japan, the breakdown in Q3 in China, fighting for pole, I feel that the gods do not want me to be in this fight.
“But you know, the pressure’s off. Go out, enjoy every race. Try to win every race. And I’ve got nothing to lose.”
“I don’t want to stand here talking like that. It’s really frustrating, but I want to be in that fight. Hopefully, the odds will turn.”
