Canada will join Eurovision Next year’s music competition will be the first to take part from Australia in 2015, the organizers have announced.
Participation is not limited to regional countries Europe and is instead open to all members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which Canada joined last week. Australia is an associate member.
The EBU and the Canadian broadcaster CBC announced on Wednesday that Canada will send events to the 2027 tournament, which will be held in Bulgaria in May. The announcement was made on Canada Day, a national holiday.
CBC president Marie-Philippe Bouchard said the participation “allows Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the world’s most prestigious music platforms”.
The CBC said it will announce the Canadian immigration process later this year. Others Eurovision States choose their contestants through televised elections. In some countries, the contestants are selected by national radio.
Eurovision director Martin Green said Canada’s entry is “another sign that, born in Europe, the contest continues to welcome the world”.
Canadians have previously entered Eurovision under different banners, most famously Céline Dion, who won the Swiss contest in 1988.
The 70th Eurovision Song Contest, held in May, had 35 countries and was won by Bulgarian singer Daraso next year’s competition will be held in his country.
Eurovision has been facing protests in recent years due to the participation of Israel, a competition since 1973. The five long-standing participants – Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia – won this year after the organizers refused to exclude Israel because of its behavior in the war against Hamas in Gaza and violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
The 2026 Eurovision final was watched by 130 million viewers worldwide, organizers said, down from 160 million in 2025.
Although the Eurovision fund has been facing financial and spectator problems due to the boycott, the competition should be expanded, and restarted. Eurovision Song Contest Asia should be held in Bangkok in November.
