Chidoji Ogbene’s equalizer ensured the Republic of Ireland continued their good run as they drew 1-1 with World Cup co-hosts Canada in Montreal.
Canada went ahead in the 24th minute with an own goal by defender Jack O’Brien, who headed a failed clearance into his own net from Stephen Eustaquio’s corner.
Ireland were awarded a penalty in the second half after Cyle Larin – who had signed a two-year deal with Southampton earlier in the day – had sent off Jamie McGrath.
Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau saved Troy Parrott’s initial effort, but in the 60th minute Ogbene was on hand to slam home the rebound and tie the game.
Ireland, who failed to qualify for this summer World CupOne went close to a winner but Crepeu denied a charging run from Mason Melia late on.
The Orlando City goalkeeper has been ruled out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after breaking his leg while playing in the MLS Cup final.
Canada, managed by former Leeds boss Jesse Marsh, will officially open the World Cup in Toronto on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina, face Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
They remain without captain Alphonso Davies, who is still nursing a hamstring injury while playing for Bayern Munich.
