At the end of last September, the adoption of electric vehicles in the US began to fall. This followed the elimination of the IRS white tax credit as part of President Trump’s and congressional Republicans’ efforts to reduce energy use and pollution control measures. Until then, buyers of some EVs could claim up to $7,500 in purchases as part of the IRS Section 30D credit, assuming the EV was below market value and the buyer’s income was less than their income. Since then, EV sales have stalled, and automakers have canceled entire product lines as they face the reality of a US government that has clearly refused to rely on fossil fuels.
But EV buyers in California are not as out of luck as their counterparts in the other 49 states and the District of Columbia. Yesterday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new EV tax into law for residents of the Golden State.
